Plant Genome Engineering and Plant Innate Immunity
Plants are essential to the environment and human life. We rely so much on plants for food to eat, oxygen to breathe, clothes to wear, fuel to drive, and medicine to cure. The growing world population demands for increased crop production. We believe plant biotechnology will play a critical role for supporting the world growth in a sustainable way.
The Qi lab works on plant genome engineering and plant innate immunity. We are interested in developing and improving tools for editing plant genome and transcriptome. We also do basic or foundational research in plant innate immunity. By collaborating with other scientists, our long-term goal is to conduct translational research for breeding and engineering better crops. One specific goal is to engineer synthetic plant immunity in major crops.

2/20/2019: Congrats to Bailey McCoy for winning the First Prize, Lidiya Franklin and Rocio Mayorga on Honorable Mention in ERHS Science Fair.
2/1/2019: Congrats to Aimee for receiving Cosmos Scholar Award and publishing her first authored paper in BMC Biology on application of Cas12a temperature sensitivity for improving plant genome editing.
12/18/2018: Qi received the FFAR 2018 New Innovator in Food and Agriculture Research Award

9/13/2018: Thanks to NSF for supporting our research on developing genome reprogramming tools (see News).
7/4/2018: Our lab coauthored two research articles. These papers demonstrated Cas9 and Cas12a are very precise for genome editing in rice and maize.
5/31//2018: Dr. Qi participated in a Salon at World Science Festival about applications of CRISPR in plants.
3/23/2018: Our lab published two papers at Molecular Plant on improved transcriptional activation systems and Cas12a (Cpf1) variants for altered PAMs.
